Swedish Massage: Introduced nearly 200 years ago, Swedish massage is still one of the most popular and widely practiced bodywork styles in the West today.
Excellent for blissful relaxation; Swedish is characterized by light to moderate pressure delivered by long gliding strokes, kneading movements, knot-relieving friction strokes, and gentle stretching and movement of the various joints and limbs.
Pregnancy Massage: Pregnancy massage is not so much a separate style as it is a body of knowledge that can be applied to modify other styles for use with the gravid client. However, massage for the expectant mother presents unique challenges for the therapist, and requires special training.
An adept therapist is familiar with the stages of pregnancy, and the physical changes involved and how these impact massage work (e.g. some strokes become even more beneficial than usual, while other techniques may be completely contraindicated).
Special positioning techniques (e.g. semi-recumbent, and side lying) for the expectant mother’s comfort are also familiar to the practitioner of pregnancy massage.

Sports Massage: This style of bodywork has been popular for decades in both Western and Eastern Europe, and has made significant in-roads in the U.S. in recent years.
As the name implies, sports massage is aimed primarily at athletes (professional and amateur) and other fitness-conscious people.
Sports massage is oriented towards increasing athletic performance:
- aiding in training regimes
- helping to prevent sports injuries or decrease their severity
- assisting in treatment and recovery from injuries
- helping to prepare the athlete immediately prior to competition and decreasing recuperation time between event
Deep Tissue Massage: Basically an evolved form of Swedish massage, deep tissue work is best suited to relieving very tight muscles tissue.
This is done by addressing the condition of muscles and other structures that lie buried under layers of superficial and intermediate tissue, and generally achieving a more profound state of relaxation (after a suitable Swedish ‘warm-up’).
deep tissue massage relies on the use of firm pressure techniques, although it needn’t be painful or uncomfortable. Reiki: Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve health and enhance the quality of life. |
Myofascial Release: This style is characterized by light pressure, and gentle stretching and manipulation of the joints.
Every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, organ, and other structure in the body has its own individual sheath of fascia: a thin ‘cling-wrap’-type connective tissue that separates and compartmentalizes these different elements.
Through repetitive use and abuse these fascia sheaths can become adhered to one another, or twisted around themselves (especially at shoulder and hip); resulting in degradation in range, ease, and quality of motion.
Proper application of myofascial release techniques can ‘unglue’ and ‘unwind’ the connective tissue, restoring proper function and comfort. Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Lymphatic drainage massage can ‘unblock’ the congested lymph nodes and vessels though very gentle and slow manipulation of the tissues at precise points, and long sweeping drainage strokes.
The lymph nodes and lymph vessels in many ways act much like our bodies’ ‘sewer system’: it carries undesirable matter (e.g. toxins, cellular wastes, and dead cells) away to be processed and eliminated.
Like any sewer system, the lymphatic network can become overloaded and ‘backed-up’; usually due to injury or illness. Examples include edema, post-surgical swelling, and bruising.
Visible decreases in swelling and discoloration are not uncommon, even before the session is concluded. |
